THE UT Police on Sunday recovered one kidnapped person, arrested three accused, and claimed to have foiled another kidnapping bid. The victim was a school student and a friend of the accused. The kingpin, who once owned a music company, lured the victim and his friend by promising to cast them in a music album. The accused were sent to three-day police remand.

According to the police, the accused were identified as Rohit Sharma alias Shera (30), a resident of Amritsar; Gagandeep Singh alias Gagni (20), a resident of Bathinda district; and Gurvinder Singh (27), a resident of Patiala. Both Rohit and Gagandeep had a criminal past. The victim was identified as Rajatpal. He was staying in a paying guest accommodation in Sector 21 and hailed from Hisar district of Haryana.

ASP (East) Guriqbal Singh Sidhu said that victim Rajatpal along with his two friends Manpreet Singh (24) and Navjot Singh (16) were staying in a PG accommodation in Sector 21. Rajatpal and Navjot were students of Class XII in Chandigarh and Mohali respectively while Manpreet was an MCom student in a city college. The ASP said that Navjot hailed from Mansa district and belonged to a rich agricultural family. Main accused Rohit Sharma, who was once the driver of Navjot’s school van, came in contact with the latter on social networking site Facebook and became his friend.

The ASP said that after becoming Navjot’s friend, Rohit started visiting him at his PG and also came in contact with Rajatpal. Rohit once owned a music company, S S Music company, which he named after his son but he suffered losses and was under a financial debt of around Rs 35 lakh. Rohit, who
has a criminal past and also went to jail in a theft case, came closer to Navjot by offering him a modelling assignment in a music album through his now defunct music company.

The ASP said that Rohit came in contact with Gurvinder who ran a fast food joint in Patiala as he used to stop at the joint while travelling. Rohit developed a good equation with Gurvinder, who was also suffering financial losses in his business. Both made a plan to kidnap Navjot to demand ransom. Rohit also contacted Gagandeep, who had a criminal past, and asked him to help them in executing their plan.

The trio, according to the ASP, met and decided to kidnap Navjot from his PG in Chandigarh. They came to the city on February 1 and reached Navjot’s PG. All, except Manpreet, had drinks at the PG which foiled the plan as Gurvinder drank heavily and could not help his accomplices.
“According to the plan, the accused wanted to kidnap Navjot on the same night but Gurvinder drank excessively and he could not even stand which foiled the plan as both Rajat and Gagandeep thought that he could not help them, so they decided to kidnap Navjot the next day,” added the ASP.

The ASP said that on February 2, the accused left Navjot’s PG but decided to execute their plan on the same day. They sent Gagandeep back to bring either Navjot or Rajatpal along with him. When Gagandeep reached Navjot’s PG, he found Rajatpal there and took him along saying that Rohit was going to meet a singer in Mohali and asked him to accompany them.

The ASP added that the accused along with Rajatpal left the city and first went to Sohana and Kharar where Rajatpal got suspicious and resisted their move but the accused injured him with a knife and took him to an isolated place at Bathinda. The accused told the police that they took Rajatpal to a tubewell where they made a video of the latter and asked him to tell his parents to give them money for his release.

On February 3, when some people came to their tubewell where Rajatpal was kept, they started asking the accused about him. Fearing that they might be exposed, the accused abandoned Rajatpal at an isolated place and left for Chandigarh to kidnap Navjot as they realised that Rajatpal’s family did not have much money to give them.

In the meantime, Rajaptpal contacted his friends by borrowing a phone at Bathinda and narrated his ordeal to them. The ASP said that earlier Rajatpal was not willing to lodge a complaint but later his friends persuaded him to do so. After this, a case was registered at Sector 19 police station and raids were conducted. The accused were arrested from Mohali when they were about to enter the city.

The ASP said that the accused were remanded in three-day police custody. The knife used by the accused was yet to be recovered.
