Soon, police mitras shall be keeping a watch and providing security in your neighbourhood as the Chandigarh Police is set to come up with a scheme.

It was after the Chandigarh Residents’ Associations Welfare Federation (CRAWFED) Chairman Hitesh Puri raised the query of having police mitras in the neighbourhood in the last Administrator’s Advisory Council meeting, a reply from the Chandigarh Police was submitted that mentioned such a scheme being planned.

Various residents’ welfare associations contribute together to appoint security guards, however, such personnel need to be further empowered, the residents had said in the meeting.

The UT police in the Action Taken Report submitted ahead of the Administrator’s Advisory Council stated that a neighbourhood watch scheme is in the pipeline.

Under this scheme, the beat officers will coordinate with chowkidars and security guards. The Chandigarh Police will also train all such personnel and provide them with proper equipment like torches and police mitras jackets.
“Furthermore, directions have been given to beat officers to keep liaison with night watchmen deployed in their areas and share their contact numbers with them,” the Action Taken Report had said.

Puri, in the last Administrator’s Advisory council meeting, stated that there should have some system like appointment of police mitras. He suggested that there should be an umbrella system where the guards have a direct contact with the police, so that in case of an untoward incident, they may directly report at the said numbers circulated by the police in the area.

While speaking to The Indian Express, the CRAWFED chairman said that currently residents and RWAs contribute to hire security guards at night, but such personnel needed to be empowered, to which the police agreed.

“Since policemen cannot be present in every locality and there is need to provide security at night, we have advised for the provision of police mitras,” Puri said.

“This will act as a strong deterrent when the security guards who are properly verified by them wearing the police mitras jackets immediately get in touch with the police immediately whenever anything happens,” he added.
