Chandigarh police on Monday observed Police Commemoration Day to honor police officers who laid down their lives while serving the country.
Contingents of the Chandigarh Police took part in the parade and paid homage to the martyrs at the event organised at the Home Guards Ground in Sector 17.
Police Commemoration Day is being observed since 1959,when a small contingent of Indian Police was attacked by the Chinese troops and 10 jawans were killed. The day is observed in all states and Union Territories on October 21 and homage is paid to valiant officers of police forces and paramilitary forces in the country,who sacrificed their lives for the nation.
Inspector-general of police,RP Upadhyay read over the names of 576 officers and jawans,who lost their lives serving for the nation last year. Upadhyay lauded the sacrifice of the martyrs while protecting the security and integrity of the country and paid homage to them by laying wreath on the memorial in Sector 17.
Meanwhile,a function Shaheedon Ko Naman was organized by the Panjab University at its campus.
A blood donation camp was also held on the occasion at the Centre for Police Administration,which was inaugurated by Senior Superintendent of Police Naunihal Singh.
