A day after a 40-year-old maid was arrested after she stole gold ornaments and cash from her employees house, the Chandigarh police have asked citizens to register their domestic helps for verification at the nearest police stations.
Normally, all domestic helpers should be registered but few citizens in the city have been following this norm. And now with the surfacing of a case where a maid was arrested for theft from her employees house in Sector 36,there is a need to ensure that all domestic helps are registered with the police, said Chandigarh Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Alok Kumar.
He added that registration of helpers and others employed at home was important for the overall security of city residents. The various private agencies that provide domestic helps to residents too should be registered with police stations.
On Monday,Chandigarh Police arrested domestic help Bana,a resident of Maloya, who had decamped with a Rs 18,000 in cash and 225 gm of gold ornaments worth lakhs of rupees from Gurpreet Singhs house. The family had gone to Nada Sahib Gurdwara on Sunday and found the gold and cash missing after returning home the same day. The suspected that Bana was involved in the theft and lodged a complaint the next day. The police then picked her up and recovered the stolen gold and cash. Recently,a similar case was reported from Delhi where a 50-year-old businessman and his family members were allegedly drugged and robbed of cash and valuables by their domestic help.
The citizens have to come forward to register the domestic helps for verification purposes, said Chandigarh Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Naunihal Singh. On an average only one out of three families turn up to register the domestic help, he pointed out.
