The Planning Commission has given a go ahead to the Chandigarh Administration to expedite the ongoing metro project. During the two-day meeting that ended on Friday,the Planning Commission also assured the Administration of its support. Secretary (Finance) Sanjay Kumar said: “Administrator Shivraj V Patil is keen to have this project for the city at the earliest. On his instructions,we discussed the metro project and got a positive response. The commission has assured us its support. The detailed project report is being prepared and various aspects are being examined. We hope to get the project rolling soon.”

The commission has agreed to recommend an additional budget of Rs 234 crore under various heads for Chandigarh. It will also make recommendations to the Union Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Home Affairs to release an additional budget of Rs 234 crore to Chandigarh. Maximum share of money has been allocated towards the ongoing slum-rehabilitation programme in the city — Rs 194 crore.
