A PGI doctor from the Pharmacology department has come up with a simple method to examine inflammatory bowel disease, bringing respite to patients reluctant to undergo a colonoscopy test.
Funded by the Biotechnology department, the study was recently conducted by Dr Bikash Medhi and his team.
The Inflammatory Bowel disease is of two types – Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis. The treatment includes long term intake of inflammatory drugs. However, before deciding on the treatment, a patient has to go for colonoscopy.

“In order to check the severity and type of inflammatory bowel disease, a patient is asked to undergo colonoscopy.
Most of the times, patient become uncomfortable. So, we are trying to develop a simple mechanism for those patients who do not want to go for colonoscopy,” said Dr Medhi.
He added, “We give sucralose solution to a patient and later collect a urine sample to estimate the intestinal permeability. This technique is a indirect way of checking inflammation. If intestinal permeability is good, the inflammation is less.”
Dr Medhi had recently conducted a clinical study at PGI, where the technique was used on more than 80 patients.
The results, which doctor says are mostly positive, will be submitted soon.
“We have completed the project and are about the submit a report. After that, we are planning to conduct another study at a much larger level,” he added.
The doctor shared the information during the recently concluded national workshop on Clinical Pharmacology.
