Patient care at PGI is set to be considerably hit as the PGI Contract Workers Union has decided to resort to a strike for the next three days starting tomorrow. The union leaders said that the decision to go on strike was taken after negotiation held today with the PGI administration at the office of Labour Officer failed to resolve the old issues.

The contractual employees who are to go on strike tomorrow number more than 1,000 including sanitation workers, hospital attendants, medical record technicians, data entry operator, store keepers and clerical staff. The Union claimed that PGI did not agree to implement the decision of the Chandigarh deputy chief labour commissioner (Central) announced on January 11,2010,to grant a similar wage to the contract workers as paid to workers directly employed by PGI.

Significantly,PGI is to start its golden jubilee celebrations from July 7. PGI spokesperson Manju Wadwalkar said the administration has already made contingency plans to take care of patients.
