Patil inspects desilting work at Sukhna

Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Shivraj V Patil along with officials of the Administration visited the Sukhna Lake on Wednesday to review the ongoing de-silting work. During the visit it was proposed by Patil to increase the number of machinery deputed on the site to further speed up the work.

It has been proposed to utilise the silt in the governmental land to boost the ‘Green Chandigarh’ initiative. The first preference will be to give silt to IRB battalion,Chandigarh Housing Board,High Court,Secretariat and educational institutions. It has also been decided to construct a bandh with silt around the area to enable visitors to take a complete round of the lake. Forest officers have been asked to identify low-lying area in the forest to construct more check dams. In order to increase the forest area around the lake,it was decided to plant more trees like tamarind and neem,which live longer and also provide fruits and economic benefits in return.

Around 36 acres of Sukhna Lake has been desilted and 41.68-cubic-ft silt has been dumped outside the lake. A total of 54 machines are in operation.
