Patil greets citizens on eve of I-Day
Chandigarh: Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Shivraj V Patil extended greetings to the people on the eve of 66th Independence Day,paying homage to the self-sacrificing and devoted leaders and patriots who struggled for freedom. He also lauded the armed forces who laid down their lives while protecting the integrity and boundaries of our country.
Police holds vigil exercise in city
CHANDIGARH: The Chandigarh Police put a ‘City Seal’ on Wednesday to check movements of criminals in the wake of Independence Day celebrations to be held on Thursday. During the ‘seal’,a major checking exercise was undertaken from 2 pm to 4 pm where 100 nakas were deployed under the supervision of 15 DSPs,22 Inspectors,11 SHOs.
Around 6,025 vehicles were checked,386 challans were issued for traffic violations and 28 vehicles impounded during the checks. A total of 738 police personnel and 50 PCR gypsies were a part of this pre-Independence Day checking exercise.
Body of unidentified youth found in Sec 26
Chandigarh: The body of a youth in his mid-twenties,wearing blue jeans and black T-shirt,was found near Kachi Lake Jungle area,Sector 26 on Wednesday. A case was registered against unknown persons at the police station. The body of the victim was found in a bad condition with his head smashed.
Two people held in attempted robbery case
Mohali: The Kurali (City) police arrested two persons Wednesday in connection with the attempted robbery at the Canara Bank ATM on the Chandigarh-Kurali road on the night of August 8.
According to SSP Gurpreet Singh Bhullar,the accused,identified as Pavitar Singh (26),and Jaswinder Singh (20),tried to break open the ATM machine on the intervening night of August 8 and 9 but fled before breaking it on seeing some night patrol officers.
PU: 3rd counselling for B Com-I on Aug 19
CHANDIGARH: Panjab University(PU) has informed that the third counselling of B Com-I will be conducted on August 19 from 9 am at the university auditorium near the Department of Law. PU Coordinator for B Com centralized admissions for the year 2013-14,Professor R.K. Gupta,said around 40 to 50 B Com-I seats were vacant in some colleges affiliated to PU,including Department of Evening Studies. Students have been advised to regularly check the website http://bcomadmissions.puchd.ac.in.
PU gears up for Independence Day
CHANDIGARH: On Independence Day,PU vice-chancellor Professor Arun Kumar Grover will unfurl the national flag at the universitys parade ground followed by a cultural programme and march past. Professor Grover will address the participating students,faculty and staff members on the occasion.
Registrar Professor A.K Bhandari has extended an open invitation to all teaching and non-teaching staff members with their family,research scholars and students to join the Independence Day celebrations.
