A 10-year-old girl in Patiala in Punjab died of suspected food poisoning on March 25 after eating her birthday cake and the police filed a First Information Report (FIR) against the bakery which supplied it. However, the Patiala police were yet to make any arrest in the case even five days after she passed away.

Manvi, a Class 5 student, celebrated her birthday on March 24. Her family ordered the cake through an online food delivery application and they cut the cake around 7 pm, after which she went to sleep. A video of the family celebrating Manvi’s birthday has gone viral after her death.

Manvi’s family told the police that after going to sleep, Manvi asked for water early in the morning and went back to sleep. They said when they later checked on her, she was unconscious. She was taken to a hospital and the doctors declared her dead.

Manvi’s family alleged that five other members of the family who ate the cake also fell ill. The family said they took the cake to the health department to ascertain the cause of her death but the health officials turned them away.

The health officials said the exact cause of Manvi’s death will be determined after the viscera report of the body.

On the complaint of Mansi’s mother Kajal, the local police registered a case against ‘Kanha Bakery’ shop under sections 304-A (death due to negligence) and 273 (sale of food or drink, any article which has been rendered or has become noxious) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Patiala civil surgeon Dr Raminder Kaur also marked an inquiry into the death.
