Hostels remained the focus of all the candidates contesting election to the Panjab University Campus Students’ Council as they made their final pitch on the last day of campaigning on Sunday.

While all the student organisations flocked to the university hostels,it was the girls’ hostels that all the parties paid special attention to. “Girls constitute the maximum number of voters on the campus. So if their support is assured, chances of your victory are more,” said Jaspreet Singh,a student leader of the Students’ Organisation of Panjab University (SOPU).

“There was no respite even on Sunday,as student leaders from various parties kept knocking at our doors since morning to win support for their party. They came in groups, went to each room to give their manifesto,” said Rakhit Kakkar,a resident of Boys’ Hostel No. 5.

Some parties also visited the students staying in paying guest accommodations near the campus, mainly Sector 15.

While all the tents put up by the parties were seen vacant even till late in the morning, the campus began reverberating with slogans as the party members returned. While the members of NSUI were spotted talking to students in their tents, other parties, including PUSU-INSO-ABVP,took out a rally outside the girls’ hostels.

The holiday failed to damp the spirits of the student leaders,as they were also seen moving in their cars carrying the banners of their respective parties. Giving two hoots to the university’s rules not to put printed banners, the cars did the rounds on the campus.

The security and police personnel were on their toes right from the morning checking the vehicles entering the varsity. The day ended with various parties calling a meeting of their members to chalk out their plans for D-Day.
