The Panjab University on Wednesday honoured players and sports promoters at the PU Annual Sports Prize Distribution Function in the University Gymnasium Hall.
PU alumnus and legendary hockey player Balbir Singh Sr was the chief guest at the function, which was organised by the Directorate of Sports.
At the award ceremony, Balbir Singh Kushwaha presided over as the guest of honour along with PU vice-chancellor Arun Kumar Grover.
Cash awards of nearly Rs 1 crore were given to the position holder students, who had secured first, second, third and fourth positions in international, senior national and All India Inter-University Championships 2015-16.
In the prize function, trophies were awarded to the colleges which have won 1st position in PU Inter College tournaments during 2015-16.
Sports promoters – principals and physical education teachers of the colleges and manager/coaches whose players had won 1st, 2nd, and 3rd position in All India Inter University championships during 2015-16 were honoured in recognition to the services rendered by them for promotion of sports.
Ambassador I S Chadha, Retd, PU registrar Col G S Chadha, Naval Kishore, DCDC Director Sports Haryana Jagdeep Singh and director sports Parminder Singh were also present on the occasion.
Earlier, in the morning PU Campus Annual Sports Prize Distribution Function was held at PU. Gymnasium Hall.
Track suits were awarded to the students who participated in the inter-university tournaments and secured first and second positions in the inter-college tournaments for the session 2015-16. PU Dean Students Welfare Navdeep Goyal was the chief guest at the PU Campus Annual Sports Prize Distribution Function and gave away the prizes to the winners.
