Panchkula Chief Medical Officer V K Bansal on Thursday ordered the setting up a special medical expert committee to investigate the alleged nursing home negligence, causing the death of 37-year-old Monica Walia,at the time of her delivery,on April 7.
On April 17,deceaseds husband Hitesh Walia,a Panchkula resident, had filed a complaint at the Panchkula DCP office against Dr Sushma Noheria and others doctors of Noheria Nursing Home for alleged gross medical negligence, which led to the death of his wife,Monica, and serious medical ailments to his new born child.
Panchkula CMO Dr V K Bansal said,A medical expert team will be set up to look into the case. At present,I cannot disclose the names of the members of the committee,as it can have a negative impact on the investigation process.
Hitesh said This was Monicas second pregnancy and, earlier, she had a caesarian section. Despite knowing the medical history of my wife, the doctor at no stage told us the risks involved in proceeding with a normal delivery.
On April 7,she was taken to the labour room. My wife had repeatedly requested them that a caesarean section be conducted. I can name the staff nurses who were of the same opinion, but the doctor refused and went ahead with a normal delivery, he said.
Hitesh added that at 10.45 pm,she was rushed to another hospital after her condition worsened. The absence of an ambulance driver was another flaw. My relative drove the ill-equipped ambulance and rushed my wife to Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research. Significant time was wasted by the doctors in recognising the medical catastrophe and initiating necessary life support measures, and later in shifting her to PGI, he said.
Hitesh further alleged that the nursing home refused to hand over the old medical records of his wife, stating that none of the documents were left behind.
Strict action should be taken against the doctors of the Noheria Nursing Home. Their medical practising license should be cancelled immediately,so that they cannot play with innocent lives. I have lost my wife and my child is under observation at PGI,as she is suffering from Asphyxia. They should be punished for this, Hitesh stated.
Dr Noheria said that there were no complications in the delivery. However, she denied the claims that the patient had pleaded for a caesarian delivery. The delivery was successful, and it was only after the delivery that the patient began to bleed profusely, following which she was shifted to another hospital, the doctor added.
When asked about the absence of an ambulance driver, she said,He took an off,but it is not a major concern as anyone can drive the ambulance, even I can.
