RAJ KUMAR and his two accomplices — his father Mahinder Pal and cousin Gurwinder Singh ‘Guru’ — wanted to hire contract killers to get realtor Suresh Kumar killed.

However, when they failed to hire any one for the task, they decided to commit the crime themselves, the Ropar police said Friday.

“It was not an instant thought to kill Suresh. The suspects had planned the murder at least a month before they executed it. They had been giving warnings to Suresh to stay away from Sajni. However, when he did not pay any heed to their warnings and went to Baddi on November 26, the suspects chased and finally killed him,” an investigating officer told Chandigarh Newsline.

“Raj Kumar and Sajni’s engagement was scheduled for November 27 in 2010. The accused conspired to kill Suresh thinking that nobody would suspect them as everybody would believe that they were busy in the ceremony preparations,” said a senior police officer.

After the police conducted narco tests on Raj Kumar and Mahinder Pal, both panicked and expressed their concerns about the findings of the narco-test to some of their associates, one of whom tipped off the police. They were detained by the police on suspicion and during interrogation they confessed having committed the crime. They were subsequently arrested.

One of the investigating officers told Chandigarh Newsline that the narco-tests on Mahinder Pal, Raj Kumar and Manraj Singh was conducted in Gandhi Nagar, Gujarat and the entire procedure took 15 days — from July 27 to August 13.

The officer added that they got the results in the last week of August, which suggested that Mahinder Pal and Raj Kumar knew about the murder.

“The report clearly said Raj Kumar and Mahinder Pal knew about the murder and how it was carried out. After the narco-tests, we were told to ask five questions each to both the suspect and we were also given a questionnaire by the experts. The suspects failed to give us satisfactory answers,” a police officer said.
