The Ropar police has arrested three persons and claimed to have solved a five-year-old death case of a Panchkula-based Realtor Suresh Kumar (26), whose charred body was found in his car with his hands and legs tied on Siswan-Baddi road on November 27, 2010.
The police made the arrests on the basis of the results of the narco-tests of in-laws of a woman, Sajni, with whom the victim wanted to marry. Sajni is the sister-in-law of Suresh’s brother. All three accused were produced in the Kharar court on Thursday and remanded in two-day police custody.
The accused were identified as Raj Kumar, Sajni’s husband, his father Mahinder Pal and their relative Gurwinder Singh alias Guru. According to the police, the three had hatched a conspiracy to murder Suresh.

Confirming the development, Ropar Senior Superintendent of Police Varinder Paul Singh told Chandigarh Newsline that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the district police got done narco-tests of Raj Kumar, his father Mahinder Pal and their relative Manraj Singh at a laboratory in Gandhinagar in Gujarat in July this year.
The Punjab and Haryana High Court had ordered the police to get the narco-tests done of the three persons who were suspected of foul play in Suresh’s death. The SSP told Newsline that the results of Raj Kumar and his father’s tests were negative following which a close watch was kept on both of them.
“Our team got some leads from the phone calls which were made between them. There was another person, Guru, who used to talk to them. We got suspicious of some conversations of the accused and finally arrested them,” the SSP said.
The SSP said that after the interrogation, both Raj Kumar and Mahinder Pal told the police that their relative Guru was also involved with them in the crime. More arrests were likely in the case, the SSP added.
On the fateful night Suresh was returning home after meeting Sajni at Baddi. Police sources said that Raj Kumar was unhappy with Suresh’s overtures to his fiancée Sajni, following which Raj Kumar allegedly hatched a conspiracy to kill him.
Suresh Kumar, a realtor, lived in Panchkula with his family and wanted to marry his sister-in-law Rajni’s sister Sajni. However, Sajni’s parents fixed her marriage with Raj Kumar. Suresh, according to his family members, went to Baddi on the night of November 27, 2010, where he met his sister-in-law Rajni and some other family members, and left for Panchkula in his Swift car.
But he did not reach home and his charred body was found on the Siswan-Baddi road. The car was also found badly burnt. A case for murder and destruction of evidence was registered at Mullanpur Garibdas police station on the day of the recovery of the body.
It was suspected that Suresh was murdered as his hands and legs were tied. The police also found an inflammable chemical from near the car. But, later, the police said that it was a suicide case. The family members of Suresh then approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which ordered the Mohali police to conduct narco-test of the persons who were suspected by the family.
Suresh’s family was not satisfied with the investigation of the Mohali police and they requested the transfer of the case to the Ropar police following which the case was shifted to the Ropar police and a Special Investigation Team was constituted.
