Panchkula: Post recarpeting, road dug up to put up poles for Independence Day function

However, on Saturday, it was noticed that the road from Red Bishop, Sector 1, to Sector 5 HUDA Ground was dug up at several points to put up bamboo poles, which will be used to build wooden frames for the welcome gate.

The event will be held at HUDA Ground in Sector 5.

While HUDA officials, including superintending engineer N K Verma said they were not aware about it, a site visit by the engineers revealed that it was being done by the district administration for the Independence Day function.

“The divider or pavement can be used to put up poles. We will talk to the district administration officials about it and repair the road immediately,” said a HUDA official.

Deputy commissioner Dr Garima Mittal said she will look into the matter. “The road should not have been dug up. But, we assure that the road will be repaired,” she said.

City magistrate Mamta Sharma said she would visit the site in the morning and will explore an alternative. “If the road has been damaged, it will be repaired well on time. The holes will be filled up. We will also consider the possibility, if we can remove the poles and put them up on the pavement.”

Officials said the welcome gates for the I-Day event is usually built on the same road every year, after which the holes are filled up, but residents emphasise that it damages the road and can be avoided.

“Residents have waited for a long time to get these roads repaired. Now, when the problem is solved, every step should be taken to maintain them. Such act of the administration is uncalled for. They should look for an alternative option, than just digging up a recently re-carpeted road,” said S K Nayyar, president, Citizen Welfare Association.
