HAVING COMPLETED one year as Panchkula MLA, Gian Chand Gupta has little to boast when it comes to his achievements. Most of the promises made in his manifesto are still unfulfilled.
The prominent promise made by the MLA in his manifesto was that of getting the smart city status for Panchkula. The city lost its chance after the form was not sent on time to the Centre. This led to protests by the residents and a tussle with Mayor Upinder Kaur.
Gupta earned some brownie points after getting Panchkula its share of water from Kajauli Water Works. But against the 9 million gallons daily of water that should have been received, at present only 2 mgd is being received.
“We lost the smart city tag. Panchkula continues to have bad roads. Despite several requests by the residents, nothing was done. It was claimed that Barwala would be made fly-free but residents continue to suffer. There is no solution to the problem of dumping ground,” said Ranjeeta Mehta, general secretary of Mahila Congress.
The promises in the manifesto which remain unfulfilled are: a university, engineering college, implementation of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Act in Panchkula’s Industrial Area, residential facilities for industrial workers at their workplace, formation of capital region development board for Mohali, Panchkula and Chandigarh along the lines of the NCR, making a provision for a double-storied service booth for the trader community.
What have been listed as his achievements by the MLA are proposals that are still in the pipeline. These include setting up government polytechnic, depot of Haryana Roadways in Panchkula, construction of toilets in big parks, plans for beautification of roundabouts and announcement of medical college by the health minister.
Getting traffic lights installed, getting the median of sectors 7 and 8 opened, re-starting Volvo bus from Panchkula to Delhi, getting work for multilevel parking in Mini-Secretariat accelerated are some of his accomplished tasks. Observing Swachh Abhiyan from October 2 to October 11 also forms one of the major achievements for him. Gupta seeks credit for those things as well which were implemented in the entire state. Setting up of mahila police station and bio-metric attendance system — the MLA has included this in his list of achievements.
