The only online presence of the Municipal Council (MC) of Panchkula is a link on the district administration’s website. When users click it,a 1.11 MB pdf document containing the names of councillors and their addresses with telephone numbers opens up. As of now, residents cannot interact with councillors and give suggestions. Even the Panchkula police has its own website.

Ravinder Rawal,President of the MC said,“We are planning to have a website soon. I have been in touch with a private agency who also developed the website for Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA). The amount spent on this project will be put up in the next MC meeting, which will take place in the first week of August.”

The website will be connected to Panchkula administration’s website.

On the content of website,Rawal said,“There will be councillor’s profile. People have confusion about area of activities of HUDA and MC. So it will clearly define the spheres of work of both the bodies. We will inform the services provided by us like marriage registration, birth and death certificates, street lighting, sanitation, and maintenance of roads and parks.”

He added that residents could file complaints and give suggestions online. “To help out residents with complaints,we will also give ward-wise information about works allotted, pending and completed. The agencies and supervisors carrying out the work will also be mentioned,” said Rawal.

MC is also planning to computerise all the records. “Since I have joined,I have seen files are missing. Had the initiative of computerisation taken earlier, such a situation would have never arrived. There is a shortage of manpower in MC. So here also digitisation can give succour and strength to the elected body,” said Rawal.

He added,“We are also planning to have a toll free number like HUDA,where residents can register their complaints.”

On having a Facebook page like that of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation,he said,“Right now we want to focus the on website. The Facebook page is not on our agenda.” On e-tendering,he added that it would take time to implement this facility.
