Panchayat polls on Dec 15,counting on December 17

The State Election Commissioner on Friday notified the schedule for elections to the gram panchayats for 12 villages of Chandigarh.

The State Election Commissioner on Friday notified the schedule for elections to the gram panchayats for 12 villages of Chandigarh. Elections would be held on December 15 and the results would be announced on December 17.

With the proposal for merger of 13 villages into the Municipal Corporation doing the rounds,there was earlier apprehension on whether the elections would be held at all. However,a decision was taken to conduct elections as the merger would take time.

Filing of nominations commenced on Friday and would continue till December 4. Scrutiny would take place a day later. Candidates can withdraw their names till December 7. The model code of conduct came into force on Friday in these villages. The limit of expenditure for sarpanch as well as panches is Rs 30,000.

The office of sarpanch has been reserved in some of the villages. At Kishangarh,Kaimbwala and Behlana,the post is reserved for women candidates. Meanwhile,for Raipur Kalan and Makhanmajra that are represented by one panchayat,the post of sarpanch is reserved for Scheduled Caste candidate. At Khuda Jassu,the post is reserved for scheduled caste women.

Sarpanches from the general category would be elected in the remaining villages including Mauli Jagran,Daria,Raipur Khurd,Dhanas,Sarangpur,Khuda Alisher and Khuda Lahora. Of the total 132 posts of panches,73 are in the general category. As many as 38 posts are reserved for women,14 for scheduled castes and 7 for scheduled caste women.

Campaigning is expected to pick up pace in the villages once the candidates are finalised.

Elections are not fought on party symbols. At times,in some villages election of sarpanch is done unanimously.
