Paddy is not poison and heavens will not fall if norms relaxed: Sukhbir

“This is paddy and not poison and heavens will not fall if the Centre relaxes procurement norms,” said Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal.

“This is paddy and not poison and heavens will not fall if the Centre relaxes procurement norms,” said Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal.

Along with brother-in-law and former minister Bikramjit Singh Majithia,Sukhbir was in the city on Sunday to attend the wedding of SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar’s granddaughter.

Speaking to The Indian Express,Sukhbir remarked: “The Centre should not forget that Punjab farmers produce paddy for the entire nation. By not announcing relaxation, the Centre is harassing the farmers of Punjab. The discolouration and excess moisture in the paddy are due to bad weather conditions on which the farmer has no control at all.”

On the issue of Captain Amarinder Singh’s installation as PPCC president,Sukhbir remarked: “This does not affect our poll plank, for the development that we have brought in for Punjab in the last four years is something that the Congress had failed to do. Whether it is Sonia Gandhi or Rahul or Captain as the president,it will not make any difference to us.”

Majithia, however, did not mince any words as he took on Amarinder. “You should not forget that we Akalis defeated Captain Amarinder Singh when he was the chief minister of Punjab. He was all powerful then. At present,he is just a (Congress) president. Defeating him now will not be a tough game,” he said.
