On Thursday morning, when the family members of the slain realtor Suresh Kumar (26) received the news that three suspects had been arrested, their five-year battle for justice had finally yielded some result. The family said their fight would only end after the suspects get the maximum punishment under the law.

“Our hopes had diminished and we were not expecting that we will get justice. But God helped us and our struggle didn’t go waste,” said Kumar’s father, Mahinder Singh. Singh, 60, said for the past five years, the family had been “suffering a lot” and the arrests had “brought some relief for them.”

“We are not financially sound. But those who murdered my son are influential people. They tried everything to save themselves, but finally they have been arrested,” says Singh. “We protested and even held a candlelight march in Delhi. The arrest is good news for us,” Singh told Chandigarh Newsline.

The Ropar police had Wednesday arrested three persons and claimed to have solved the five-year-old sensational murder case of Kumar, whose charred body was found in his car with his hands and legs tied on Siswan-Baddi Road on November 27, 2010.

Since the news of the arrests came in, relatives and the family friends have started visiting the family. “Everyone is happy that police have finally arrested those people and there is progress in the case,” said Kumar’s brother, Rakesh.

The family members hailed the efforts of the Ropar police and blamed the a senior Mohali police officer for not showing any “seriousness” in the case. “We went to Mohali police soon after the murder of my son, but they didn’t show any seriousness. He (the officer concerned) even tried to change the murder into a suicide case,” saidan emotional Mahinder. “Thanks to Ropar police, who took action within six months”, he added.

Recalling the fateful day, the family said Kumar was murdered and then his car and body were burnt. “On November 26, 2010 around 8 pm, he (Kumar) told us that he was going to watch a movie. He never returned. The next day, we were informed that his body had been found,” said Kumar’s mother, Surjeet Kaur.
