Within a month,a series of tragedies befell Dharam Singh,14 years of age and Rajwinder Singh,17 years of age. The two brothers lost their parents and grandmother. The grandsons of sepoy Babu Singh, who had been honoured with the Vir Chakra for his bravery in the 1948 war,the two lost their father Karamjit Singh on January 5. Karamjit was ill. Having lost her son,Gurdev Kaur, their grandmother, slipped into depression and passed away on February 5. Two days later, their mother also died.

Orphaned, the two are struggling to make ends meet. The two were on Sunday honoured by Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal during the War Decorated India (WDI) Triennial National Convention cum Reunion 2013. Moved, the Chief Minister wasted no time in announcing that the Punjab government will cover the entire expenditure of Sepoy Babu Singh’s grandsons. “Irrespective of whatever you want to study, even if it is education from world class institutes, the Punjab government will bear the entire expenditure,” assured the Chief Minister.

When asked about their ambitions,“definitely an Army officer”,responded the two in a trice. The two brothers know,in detail, about their grandfather. “He suffered three bullet injuries during the war. He was brave,we are proud that we are his descendants,” says Dharam Singh.

Thanking the War Decorated India (WDI) for giving an opportunity to gather all war decorated officers from across India under one roof, their uncle Gyan Singh said,“This help by the Chief Minister will immensely benefit the two in shaping their future”.
