One youth killed, two injured as bike skids in Sector 22-C

All riding without helmets, they were coming back after meeting common friend.

In a  freak accident which occurred near the gurdwara in Sector 22-C on Monday morning, one youth died while two were injured when the bike they were riding skidded. The three school students, all residents of Sector 22, were triple-riding the motorcycle without helmets at a high speed, said police.

The deceased was identified as Pawandeep Singh alias Mani, 17, who was driving, according to one of the pillion riders, Atul, 15. The third youth on the motorcycle was Paras, 16, who is currently admitted to the Advance Trauma Centre of PGI with a head injury and a fracture.

Mani was a Class XII student of Government Model Senior Secondary School of Sector 40. While Atul is a Class X student of Guru Nanak Public School, Sector 36, Paras is a Class IX student of Shishu Niketan School, Sector 22. Twin brother of the deceased, Sunny, also wanted to go along with the trio, but could not due to his exam. He is a Class XII student of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 35.

Atul told Chandigarh Newsline, “We were going back home. Mani was driving and he suddenly lost control of the motorcycle.”

According to his statement to the police, Atul said that the trio were on their way back home after meeting a common friend when their motorcycle skidded. The three were dragged along for about 50 metres till the bike hit a tree and was completely damaged.

One of the residents who was going towards the gurdwara called the police and the three were rushed to Government Multi-Specialty Hospital, Sector 16. Paras and Mani were referred to PGI where Mani was declared dead on arrival.

One of Mani’s cousins said, “He had left the house in the morning to visit another friend to wish him happy birthday. We do not know whose bike it was; Mani does not have any vehicle.” Mani’s family is constructing a new house at Balongi and is living in Sector 22 on rent.

Mani’s body was handed over to family members after a post-mortem. The police have not yet registered any case in the matter. However, inquest proceedings have been initiated in the case on the basis of a DDR which was lodged at Police Post, Sector 22.

All the three, Mani, Paras and Atul, were on leave from school. The motorcycle belonged to Paras, said a police official.
