On Hellen Keller Day,cellphones to break the sight barrier

In a bid to help the visually challenged connect with their dear ones,as many as 40 mobile handsets specially designed for the purpose was donated to them by Amway Opportunity Foundation (AOF),a non-profit organisation,on the occasion of Hellen Keller Day on Sunday.

The day was celebrated in collaboration with the UT Administration and the National Association for Blind (NAB) at Asha Kiran,a vocational training institute for the disabled in Sector 46.

Director Social Welfare Samwartak Singh presented the handsets to the beneficiaries.

The handsets come with customised keypads to help the users dial the phone numbers and also ascertain the identity of the caller. The handset comes with a SIM card and Rs 200 worth of talktime.

On the legendary Hellen Keller,NAB chief Vinod Chadha said: “With her grit and determination,Helen Keller overcame her multiple disability and raised the benchmark for all.”

AOF chairman William Pinckney said the foundation,in partnership with NAB,carries out various activities for the betterment of the visually challenged.

It has so far donated 80,000 braille books,ambulances and computer centres for the needy.
