The popularity of online libraries is on the rise in the city. Reason: the convenience it offers to its subscribers. All that one needs to do is log on to a given website, browse, choose the books, pay a monthly membership and the consignment will be delivered at home or office.

“Online library is very convenient to use as it saves time, energy, effort and money,” said Vanita Arora,a student. “As far as the number of users are concerned, there has been a decline, but it has made no impact on readership. We provide online subscription to students, but some of them still prefer to come to the library as it gives them the required environment to study,” said Vipin Kumar, manager,British Library. Chief Executive of The Browser Library at Sector 8,Pankaj P Singh added,“Online library is only supplementing physical library. It is beneficial for students as it is more convenient and practical.” Even working professionals vouch for the convenience offered by these libraries. “I go for online subscription as it saves time,” said Devleena Das,a government employee.

Suraj P Nagpal, librarian,Central State Library,Sector 17,said even as membership is increasing each year, subscribers now come with specific interest. “Enrollment is getting higher every year, but usage is comparatively less,” Nagpal said, adding: “We are shortly starting with our online library subscription. Door service is provided to our readers and also to those who are handicapped and cannot visit the library.” Neeru Gupta, librarian,Central State Library,Sector 34,said owing to the growing demand, they plan to launch the system of online subscriptions.
