No contractor willing to carpet parking lot, claim it is unfeasible

The proposal of the Municipal Corporation to construct a parking lot outside its building has been in the lurch for the past two years.

The proposal of the Municipal Corporation to construct a parking lot outside its building has been in the lurch for the past two years. Even though the area was dug up,no contractor has shown any interest in carpeting the parking lot with the site not being quite feasible.

The Municipal Corporation had been at loggerheads with the UT Administration over the piece of land. The civic body reclaimed the land that was encroached upon by Hotel Shivalikview. While the civic body had a few years back approved Rs 35 lakh for construction of the parking lot, work could not begin due to the land being encroached. A tussle was witnessed between the councillors and the officials before the land present opposite Jan Marg was taken into possession.

The MC lost no time in digging up the area to construct the parking lot. Two years have passed, but the civic body has not been able to find a contractor who will be willing to take up the work of carpeting.

An official said,“There are a large number of trees on the stretch that are present every few feet. The contractors claim that work cannot be done here with a machine. While tenders have been floated a number of times,we have not received a positive response.”

The result of the haste of the Municipal Corporation is that the area fills up with water after rains, making it difficult for people to park their vehicles on the slushy stretch. Due to this, vehicles are parked on either side of the road.

Area Councillor Pardeep Chhabra said,“Tenders were invited six times, but no success,so far. Work for carpeting is pending as it has to be done manually. Big rollers cannot be used due to lack of adequate space and presence of trees. We got the land reclaimed two years back. It is now up to the officials to get the work completed”.
