No action against mayor for illegal construction: Councillors

The show cause notice had stated that the owner has illegally constructed the building without getting its site plan approved by the UT administration and the MC and therefore, the construction be stopped.

Two days after Mayor Poonam Sharma was issued a show cause notice for illegally constructing a commercial building in Attawa, Sector 42, some councillors alleged that the construction in the building is still on and no action is being taken.

Municipal corporation (MC) joint commissioner Rajiv Gupta said the building branch had issued a notice to stop the construction, but if some kind of construction is still going on there is no provision of punishment till the date of hearing on September 28. “We had sent a team from the engineering wing today (Thursday) to make a video of any work happening in that building. We will produce it at the time of the hearing,” said Gupta.

The show cause notice had stated that the owner has illegally constructed the building without getting its site plan approved by the UT administration and the MC and therefore, the construction be stopped.

Poonam said, “I am a law-abiding person and cannot do anything against the rules of the administration. If some painting work is going on in the building, it is not counted as construction and I am only responsible for my area in that building which is 1.5 kanal and not for the other areas in that duplex building, which belongs to other people.”

She added, “Since, I am not from BJP, I am being targeted. People who are targeting me should also see the rise of buildings in other areas, that too illegally. There is no new construction going on. I have photographs of the building with the old construction that I will put up at the hearing.”
