The credit cards used by a customer at Nikkamal and Babu Ram Jewellers,Sector 22,to purchase two gold chains worth Rs 66,000 were stolen.
A Sector-46 resident,Neelkamal, claimed that two credit cards fell out of his pocket while he was taking out his handkerchief in Sector 22 last evening.
He approached the police on Tuesday after he realised he had lost them.
On Monday evening,a turbaned man in a green shirt, claiming to be Neelkamal, purchased the gold chains using the two credit cards Rs 46,000 from one and the rest through the second.
But the mans nervous behavior and haste aroused suspicion after which the owner,Kamal Jain, asked him to provide identification proof.
When the man said he had forgotten the documents at home,an employee was sent along with him to his residence in Sector 21.
Later, the man managed to give the employee the slip. Subsequently,Jain called in the police, who are examining CCTV footage from the shop to trace the unidentified customer.
In the morning, the bank made the payment to the jeweller. Neelakamal works with a software company based in Sector 34.
Apparently, the credit cards were stolen. Till now,we have not received a written complaint from the victim,as he wants to take up the matter with the bank first, said Ramesh Chander,Station House Officer of the Sector-17 police station.
