Mission Aagaaz,a local NGO,has written to Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal demanding a thorough probe by “an independent agency preferably CBI” and filing of FIR against owners of Khanna Paper Mill in the case of fire at Khanna Paper Mill,in which crores of raw material were reduced to ashes.

Accusing the mill owners of acting in “most irresponsible manner” while handling the combustible material, the letter to Badal states: “The mill will get an insurance compensation of crores of rupees. Who will compensate the Amritsar administration, the fire brigade, the airport authorities and the Army?” The letter also demanded “arrest of the culprits at the earliest to prevent tampering of evidence”.

The NGO alleged that the mill threw smouldering waste on a national highway exacerbating the issue. The NGO said that the mill had “common boundary wall with Springdale School. As a result of the fire, many houses had to be vacated and suffered damage.

Khanna Paper Mill Director Suneet Kochhar, however, refuted all allegations. “Khanna Paper Mill has adhered to all norms and has not committed any violations. An inquiry by the district administration is already on in the issue. We did not dump any waste paper on the roadside,” Kochhar said, adding that the mill was located in a notified industrial area. “The mill is a major industry in Amritsar. Such baseless allegations will discourage industrialists from coming here,” Kochhar said.
