The joy of a Panchkula couple vanished even before they could share it with their dear ones. Their new-born boy was stolen by two unidentified women from the Panchkula General Hospital during the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday. The mother of the stolen baby,Meena (35),was lying on her bed at the maternity ward of the hospital… inconsolable. We had prayed at Hardiwar for this boy….I was told at 3.30 am that my son has been stolen, she said. Meenas husband Gajraj,a resident of Haripur,Sector 4,said that she was admitted to the General Hospital at around 9 am on Monday and gave birth to a baby at 5 pm.
She had a normal delivery and we were all happy for the baby boy. My mother and sister-in-law were attending to Meena in the maternity ward. In the ward, two unidentified women were visiting every new-born and they also came to Meenas bed and greeted her for giving birth to the baby boy. They pretended that they too had a patient in the ward, said Gajraj, who runs a tea stall.
Meenas sister-in-law Suman said that one of these two women was well-dressed and pretended to belong to a well-off family. The two women there in the maternity ward were regularly inquiring about the baby. They befriended me and our mother-in-law,Munni,in the ward. At around 2 am,one of the women asked me to accompany her to the the canteen outside the hospital so that both of us could have tea. Gajraj and my mother-in-law were sleeping outside the ward, said Suman. And here Suman fell into the trap.
As I was attending to the baby in the ward, the woman asked her maid to take care of the baby till we were back from the canteen. I handed the baby to the maid who was sitting in the waiting room and we two headed towards the canteen. As we came out of the hospital, the woman said that she had forgotten her purse and would get it first. She headed towards the parking area of the hospital. I waited for half an hour near the canteen. When she did not return,I went back to the ward. I could not find any of the two women and the newborn baby. I also went inside the ward but both had vanished. I woke my mother-in-law and Gajraj up and we searched the hospital but could not find the duo and the baby, she explained.
Gajraj immediately called the police and on his complaint, they registered a case of kidnapping and cheating at the Sector 5 police station. We are investigating the case. We have been able make a sketch of the lady who stole the boy, said the Sector 5 police station Station House Officer.
There are no CCTV cameras installed in the hospital which could have helped trace the accused women. The baby was handed over to an unidentified woman by the aunt outside the ward; it shows her callousness, said General Hospital Senior Medical Officer Dr Usha Gupta.
We dont have any police security in the hospital. We have deployed a few of our own employees for security in the hospital, she added.
