As the student organisations in Panjab University (PU) gear up for the Student Council elections on September 4,some of the parties have decided to bank on the girl power this year,by selecting girl candidates to contest for the main positions in the council,including the
president and general secretary posts.
Student Federation of India (SFI) has selected Navjot Kaur,from the Department of Physics,for the post of president,while the alliance of Indian National Student Organization (INSO),Panjab University Student Union (PUSU) and Akhil Bhartiya Vidya Parishad (ABVP) has also chosen a girl candidate,Abha Sharma,for the post of the general secretary.

All the major parties have always been hesitant to consider girls for major positions,thus,allowing them to contest for the post of vice-president.
Following the same trend,this year too all the parties have selected girls to contest for the post of vice-president.
It is high time that all the student organisations in the university take note of the fact that there ought to be equality among boys and girls on the campus. If there can be a boy president,why cannot a girl be on that position, SFIs Navjot Kaur asks.
