Toeing a line different from Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh who has asked Sikhs to produce more children in view of the 2011 Census data, Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal has said there was a need to study the reasons behind the fall in the community’s population instead of creating panic.

Harsimrat was in Mansa and Bathinda to attend the functions of her NGO, Nanhi Chhan, on Thursday. “Sikhs are present across the globe and in a few countries they are even serving at high positions, making our country proud. There is also this trend of going abroad, this seems to be a major reason (for the decline in community’s population),” she said. At 903 per 1000 males, the female sex ratio is among the lowest in the country.
