Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Saturday directed officials to install rooftop solar panels on all government buildings across the state, including schools, colleges, hospitals, offices and godowns, as part of a major push toward clean and green energy.

The directive was issued during a high-level review meeting on power sector budget announcements held at the Civil Secretariat.

Saini emphasised that the initiative is central to Haryana’s strategy to accelerate renewable energy adoption and reduce reliance on conventional sources. He instructed departments to fast-track installations under the PM Suryaghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, which aims to promote household rooftop solar systems nationwide.

Reviewing month-wise progress, he called for strict monitoring mechanisms and greater accountability to ensure timely implementation.

Saini also ordered the establishment of new solar parks across the state to expand Haryana’s renewable capacity. Additionally, to improve public safety and enhance the visual appeal of major roads and highways, he directed immediate removal of outdated and defunct electricity poles.

During the meeting, Haryana Power Generation Corporation Limited (HPGCL) Chairman Shyamal Misra reported significant progress in solar adoption. As of November 20, the state has completed 42,486 rooftop solar installations. Haryana aims to scale this number dramatically, targeting 2,22,000 installations by March 31, 2027.

Misra also highlighted a new initiative—the Saur Urja Protsahan Yojana—designed by discoms to encourage state government employees and regular bill-paying consumers to switch to solar power. “The scheme has been submitted for government approval and is expected to accelerate rooftop solar uptake once implemented, helping the state meet or exceed its renewable energy targets,” a government spokesperson said.

Saini stressed that all pending power sector projects must be completed within stipulated timelines to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply across Haryana. “Energy security is crucial for economic growth. Every pending project must move forward without delay,” he said, reaffirming the government’s commitment to expanding power availability.

The power department presented its long-term vision to build a self-sustaining energy ecosystem capable of meeting rising demand. A major component of this expansion plan involves strengthening thermal power generation. Officials informed Saini that construction on an 800 MW ultra-supercritical thermal unit at Yamunanagar will begin soon, with support from Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL). Saini directed the department to expedite all necessary approvals to ensure the rapid commencement of the project.

The meeting was attended by senior government officials, including Rajesh Khullar, Chief Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister; Anurag Rastogi, Chief Secretary; Dr Saket Kumar, HPGCL MD; Mani Ram Sharma, Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam MD; and other officials from the power department and discoms.
