On April 24, Jasbir Singh had allegedly desecrated the Guru Granth Sahib at the historic Kotwali Gurdwara in Morinda town of Ropar district. (File) A lawyer was apprehended while trying to shoot Morinda sacrilege case accused, Jasbir Singh, inside Ropar district court premises on Thursday evening.
Police said that the lawyer, identified Sahib Singh Khural, was overpowered before he could open fire by policemen who had brought Jasbir Singh for production before the Ropar court.
Khural was subsequently whisked away to a local police station for interrogation, and his licenced pistol seized.
An investigation in the case had been launched, with police stating till the filing of this report that Khural had been detained, not arrested. According to the police, the lawyer Khural is a resident of Morinda and was practicing at the Ropar district court.
On April 24, Jasbir had allegedly desecrated the Guru Granth Sahib at the historic Kotwali Gurdwara in Morinda town of Ropar district. The entire incident was captured on CCTV cameras installed inside the gurdwara premises. An electrician by profession, Jasbir was nabbed on the spot by devotees who were present inside the gurdwara premises.
Ropar Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Vivek Sheel Soni, on Thursday told The Indian Express that an investigation had been launched in the case and an FIR yet to be registered.
“We are yet to register an FIR in the case. It will be done after we conclude our preliminary probe. We are proceeding according to the law in the case,” the SSP said.
According to the police, the incident took place at around 4.30 pm on Thursday when a police team was taking Jasbir Singh to be produced in court.
Advocate Khural, who was present on the court premises, approached Jasbir and the police party and suddenly whipped out a gun. However, before he could open fire, Khural was overpowered by some alert police personnel who had noticed him whipping out a gun.
The lawyer was later escorted to a local police station for questioning, where sources said that some members of the District Bar Association were also present till filing of the report.
Meanwhile, Jasbir was produced before the court which extended his police remand by two more days on Thursday.
