In a move to encourage women empowerment,the Chandigarh Police has sent a proposal to the UT Administration to fill 25 posts of Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) lying vacant,with women police personnel. Candidates for the 25 posts will be directly recruited through an entrance examination. Currently,the Chandigarh Police has a sanctioned strength of 275 personnel for the post of ASI.
With crimes against women on an increasing trend,more women officers are needed to register and investigate such complaints. The official figures of the police state that as many as 164 cases of kidnapping of women and girls have been reported till December 8 this year,as compared to 82 cases last year. Similarly,a total of 38 cases of rape have been reported this year (till December 8) as compared to 27 last year. The number of molestation cases,too,has increased to 173 this year (till December 8) from 107 last year.
With a high rate of crime against women,more number of women should be present in the police force,so that women can feel safe while visiting police stations. The last time I visited a station regarding a complaint,I was glad to see a few women personnel working for and catering to the public, said Charanjit Kaur,a resident of Sector 49.
A proposal has been sent to UT Administration. Our department requires more investigating officers to solve crime cases. We have planned to fill the posts lying vacant with women personnel to encourage their empowerment, said IG R P Upadhyaya.
It is a very good initiative by the Chandigarh Police. In todays world,women have the potential to achieve success in any field of work. The move will surely help in encouraging more number of women to join the force, said a woman constable posted at a city police station.
These days,police departments pan-India are encouraging women to work with them. It is beneficial for the department to have more women personnel too, said Shweta Chauhan,a trainee DSP.
