Police personnel or their wards pasting Punjab Police ‘logos’ or inscribing ‘police’ on private vehicles could attract strict punishment as the Mohali district police have decided to take a tough stance against this practice.
Directions in this regard have been issued to all the police stations in the district and the traffic police.
The decision to take tough action against such violators was taken after the traffic policemen complained to their senior officials that they have to let such violators free as they claim to be kin of police personnel or show the police logos pasted on their vehicles.
A senior police officer in the district, on condition of anonymity, told Chandigarh Newsline that the traffic police personnel have, many times, brought the problem to their notice following which the directions have been issued to deal strictly with those who have the Punjab Police logo pasted or have written ‘Police’ on their private
vehicles.
The officer added that traffic police personnel complain that children of some police personnel misuse this and roam outside educational institutes.
On being questioned, they allegedly point to the police logos and escape action.
“Though these are standing orders, we want to deal with it strictly as the law is equal for all. We will not let the relatives or children of police personnel violate it,” the official added.
Ramdeep Partap Singh, a city-based lawyer, said law-breakers also take the advantage and escape by using the logos. Singh demanded that no private vehicle should be allowed to paste the police logo.
As for the punishment, Singh said that if found guilty then the vehicle of the people concerned should be impounded with immediate effect and should only be released after the identity of the police personnel is discerned.
Singh also added that the disciplinary action could also be taken against the police personnel whose vehicle is found violating the rule.
SP (Traffic), Mohali, S S Bains, however, said he was not aware of the directions but added that nobody will be spared if found violating the rules.
