In an effort to crack down on illegal mining, the district administration has decided to take on the violators by carrying out surprise checks at night.
Mohali deputy commissioner D S Mangat has already directed the officials concerned to carry out raids in the illegal mining areas.
An official of the district administration told the Chandigarh Newsline that steps have been taken to curb illegal mining in the district. “We were receiving complaints from various parts. So, we have decided to ban mining at night. It will help curb the menace,” said the official.
He added that the transportation of gravel and sand will also be checked through special nakas in different parts of the district.
“It will also help to stop illegal mining in the district as vehicles loaded with sand and gravel escape the eyes of the authorities. Now a vigil would be kept at the night also to crack a whip on illegal miners,” said the official.
The official also added that DC Mangat also told the mining officials to strictly follow the orders or face the music.
A minor was killed after he drowned in a pit created for illegal mining at Abhipur village on Tuesday. The family members demanded strict action against the people who are involved in digging up river beds in the area, which is one of the most affected areas.
