A Municipal Corporation team along with the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) Monday reached Mohali’s Phase 4 for an encroachment drive sparking protests from the residents, which led the administration to withdraw from the spot.

Waiting for orders for nearly six hours, the teams only initiated the demolition work after Municipal Commissioner Parminder Pal Singh arrived at around 4 PM.

The dispute over the encroachment drive has been a subject of dispute between the Phase 4 residents and the civic bodies for some time.

A day earlier, Phase 4 residents had questioned the joint action taken by the administration and called the drive “arbitrary” and “against rules”. They had also filed a petition in the Mohali court.

Following this, the court on Monday summoned the GMADA, the Municipal Corporation and police. Appearing before the court, the officials sought additional time to submit their response. The court scheduled the next hearing for December 8.

While in the contempt case in the High Court, the residents have filed another plea to be added in this case, which will be heard tomorrow December 2.

Residents demanded that the commissioner produce written orders authorising the action. Advocate Pritpal Singh Bassi was part of the protesters. Arguments broke out between the residents and the civic bodies.

Illegal action, damage to property: residents

Advocate Bassi alleged that the municipal body targeted the house of an individual because he was among those who approached the court. The advocate claimed the team, out of personal vendetta, removed the house’s iron grill and took it with them. “We are filing a complaint at the Phase-1 police station against the Municipal Commissioner and the team that came.”

When contacted, Municipal Commissioner Parminder Pal Singh refuted the allegations. “We are strictly following the Hon’ble High Court’s directions. There is no personal vendetta involved.”

Pal also said, “Action will be uniform, and no one will be allowed to encroach on government land. Anyone obstructing official duty will face legal consequences as per the law.”
