Mixed response to Earth Hour campaign in city

Earth Hour,an attempt to save the planet by switching off lights to reduce greenhouse emission,evoked a mixed response in the city on Saturday. Though a few areas responded positively and switched off lights for one hour,many people were not even aware of the campaign.

All roundabouts of the city were seen well-lit between 8.30 and 9.30,the official one hour of the campaign. Most of the commercial establishments across the city also did not switch off their lights. “I am not aware what Earth Hour is all about. Nobody informed me to switch off lights for one hour,” said a Sector-17 shopkeeper. Amit Sachdeva,a resident of Sector 23,duly switched off the lights of his house at 8 pm and later went around asking his neighbours to follow suit. “We are bound to save the earth. By switching off lights for one hour,we can certainly contribute our bit towards the planet,” he said.

Shivinder Sehdev,a resident of Sector 21,said though a few commercial areas observed the earth hour,“the government should provide information about the campaign so that everybody pitches in to save the earth”.
