The family filed a missing person complaint with the local police
Pakistan Rangers have detained a youth from the Bhoepur village in Punjab’s Jalandhar district after allegedly crossing the international border via the Tarn Taran sector, police sources said Thursday. The detainee has been identified as Sharandeep Singh, 23, a resident of Shahkot.
Sharandeep’s father Satnam Singh said his son left home on November 2 along with a friend, Mandeep Singh. “For days, we did not know where he was. When we questioned Mandeep repeatedly, he initially claimed he had dropped my son in Shahkot, but later admitted that he had left him near the Tarn Taran border, close to Rattoke village,” Satnam Singh said.
The family filed a missing person complaint with the local police. “On December 21, we finally came to know about his whereabouts and that he is currently in Pakistan,” the father added.
According to police sources, Sharandeep is suspected to have crossed into Pakistan through the Rattoke Sarhali area, a village linked to Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) operative Harvinder Singh Rinda. After crossing the border, he was apprehended in Pakistan’s Kasur sector, where Rangers later released a photograph showing him in handcuffs, said sources.
Satnam Singh further said that Sharandeep was a promising wrestler. “Around one and a half years ago, after a wrestling bout, he had a fight with someone, due to which his hand was badly damaged and had to be amputated partially. After that incident, he went into depression and, unfortunately, fell into drug addiction. We believe he may have crossed the border under the influence of drugs,” Satnam Singh said, appealing to the authorities to facilitate his return to India.
Sharandeep’s mother, Harjeet Kaur, said the family had been living in constant fear. “Earlier, we did not even know whether our son was alive or not. Now we know he is in Pakistan. My only appeal to the government is to bring my Sharandeep back home,” she said.
Harvinder Singh Virk, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), confirmed receipt of a missing person complaint. “We are conducting a thorough investigation. It has now come to light that the youth crossed into Pakistan and was detained by the Pakistan Rangers. The matter is being examined in detail,” he said. The deputy superintendent of police in Shahkot has also confirmed the detention.
Notably, BKI operative Harvinder Singh Rinda, who is based in Pakistan, has repeatedly been accused by security agencies of radicalising and misleading Punjabi youth into anti-national activities.
The police said they are investigating all angles, including possible influence or coercion.
