The police detained some men for questioning, but failed to make any headway in the case of murder of the minor girl whose body was found near a nullah near colony number 4 on Saturday morning.

Among those questioned were two relatives of the girl and a resident of Dhakoli. According to Raj Kumar, a neighbour, the police questioned two more persons, identified as Pankaj and Chandan.

The girl was abducted from outside her house on Friday night around 9 and was found murdered in the forest area near the colony early on Saturday. Her body was naked and had several injury marks, leading to suspicion that she was raped, then strangulated to death, and dumped in the bushes.

The police are working on the theory that someone known to the girl was involved in the crime, because she was seen going away, sitting on the shoulders of a man.

The post-mortem report of the girl has not yet come. Acting SHO of the Industrial Area Police Station Inspector Jaspal Singh said they hoped to get it on Monday. The police have registered a case of kidnapping and murder.

Superintendent of Police Parvinder Singh said that the police were yet to ascertain many facts. Deputy Inspector General A S Cheema said that a search of the forest area was conducted for clues to the crime. Sources said that the girl’s clothes and slippers were found, but the police denied it.

The girl’s father said that the family did not suspect anyone. “I do not know why the police are picking up my relatives,” he said.

The minor’s uncle Swaminath, who was questioned, said, “I told the police that I had gone to collect money from my contractor in the evening. I was waiting in the park when my brother came and told me that he could not find his daughter. We went looking for the child everywhere.’’

Talking to Chandigarh Newsline, the woman who saw the girl being taken away recalled, “I was standing at my door when I saw a man who asked the minor ‘let’s go’, and took her away. I could not see his face as it was dark.’’
The woman said she could not see where the two went. “It was when the girl’s mother came rushing, asking about the girl that I realised that she had been abducted.”

Five arrested, Kainth booked

The police have arrested five men in connection with the protests which broke out in colony number 4 after the girl’s body was found. They are Guru Datt Mishra alias Prince, Sanjay Kumar Hanuman, Saruv Yadav, Kuldeep Verma and Mahinder Singh. They have been booked for rioting, attempt to murder, assaulting police officials on duty and deterring them from performing duties. The SHO said that former senior deputy mayor Satish Kainth was booked for leading the mob.
