Minister orders survey to assess damage to crops

Strong velocity winds across the state and hailstorm in mid and high hills on Wednesday night caused widespread damage to the apple and mango crops.

Strong velocity winds across the state and hailstorm in mid and high hills on Wednesday night caused widespread damage to the apple and mango crops.

Revenue Minister Gulab Singh Thakur has ordered a special girdwari in the apple belt of Rohru in Shimla district.

In a statement issued on Thursday,Thakur said: “Revenue officials have been directed to conduct a special survey in the area to assess the damage. Relief to farmers will be given according to the relief manual.”

Earlier in the day,BJP legislator from Rohru Khushi Ram Balnatah met the minister to demand a survey. Balnatah said Sindasli,Diswani and Gawas panchayats and a couple of adjoining villages were the worst affected.

According to estimates,apple production in Himachal is expected be early and go beyond 2.5 crore boxes this year,which is far more than the production of the previous year.

Horticulture development officers in Hamirpur and Kangra districts have also got reports of damage to mango crop due to strong velocity winds. The extent of damage would be assessed by the department,said a spokesperson. The maximum damage has been reported from Bilaspur,Hamirpur,Kangra and Mandi districts.
