Punjab Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr Balbir Singh, with the support of the Philanthropy Club, Sunday inaugurated a fully equipped modern thalassemia Ward at Civil Hospital, Ludhiana.

This ward will provide regular blood transfusions, specialised counselling, and modern treatment facilities to hundreds of patients from Ludhiana and neighbouring districts.

He said that in many countries thalassemia has been eradicated, and Punjab is moving towards the same. Under this, bone marrow transplant services have been initiated with funds provided by Coal India, and with collaboration of Christian Medical College and Hospital, state government is conducting free stem cell transplants for thalassemia patients.
