On the first day of the launch of the mega enrolment campaign for admissions to classes from pre-primary level to Class XII in government schools in Punjab, the state school education department claimed to have achieved more than 100 per cent on March 10.
Out of 23 districts, a dozen districts have achieved more than a hundred percent target in school admissions, while the remaining 11 have achieved between 78 per cent and 98 per cent of their target, officials said.
Punjab School Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains has ordered a mega admissions campaign in all government schools in the state from March 10. The first day’s campaign was held from 8 am to 8 pm.
The government has fixed a target of enrolling one lakh new students on a single day on the first day of the admission drive. According to sources, the education department has fixed a specific target for every district.
According to the report that was compiled at 11.30 pm on March 10, 100.30 per cent students have enrolled.
The report revealed that Fatehgarh Sahib district topped with 134.06 per cent enrolment. The districts of Ferozpur, Barnala, Amritsar, Bathinda, Kapurthala, Patiala, SBS Nagar, Malerkotla, Fazilka, Tarantaran, and Sangrur have achieved targets of 128.28 per cent, 120.56 per cent, 111.01 per cent, 110.54 per cent, 110.34 per cent, 110.04 per cent, 109.81 per cent,108.63 per cent, 107.96 per cent, 10,3.99 per cent, and 103.44 per cent respectively.
Among the remaining 11 districts, Hoshiarpur achieved 98.42 per cent, Pathankot 95.14 per cent, Moga 91.91 per cent, Muktsar 91.90 per cent, Gurdaspur 91.70 per cent, Ludhiana 90.44 per cent, Rupnagar 87.73 per cent, Jalandhar 85.25 per cent, Faridkot 81.70 per cent, SAS Nagar 80.88 per cent, and Mansa 78.11 per cent of the enrolment target fixed for the day.
Bains had directed the officials of the department to set up admission booths at the main gate of every government school in Punjab from March 10 to March 31, to make the admission drive-2023 more effective.
After the strength of students in government schools saw a massive dip, the then education secretary Krishan Kumar first started an enrollment drive during his stint from 2017 to 2022. The officer first improved the infrastructure in the schools and then started making door-to-door visits along with other officials to make parents aware of the facilities available in the government schools.
Following his sincere intervention, the government schools saw an increase in admissions. Several students from private schools also shifted to government schools during Kumar’s tenure as education secretary. In 2021 nearly 2 lakh students from private schools opted to get themselves enrolled in government schools. In the previous year, more than 1.60 lakh students from private schools shifted to government schools, as per the records of the education department.
Meanwhile, education experts have said that the exact position of the enrolment would be known only when the physical classes start on April 1.
