The Chandigarh Police arrested three people Saturday and seized meat— that the police suspect could be buffalo meat— from their possession.
Police said the accused were arrested near the Kalagram Light Point after a police party searched the auto in which they were travelling and found the meat kept in buckets. The accused, residents of Burail, told the police that they were going to distribute the meat, which they claim was that of a goat they had sacrificed on the eve of Eid.
SDPO (East) Guriqbal Singh Sidhu said the police were investigating the case. “It could be buffalo meat. We will send it for testing,” he said, adding that the accused had failed to explain to the police the source of the meat. Jasvinder Singh, SHO, Manimajra, told Chandigarh Newsline that the police had registered a case under Section 429 (mischief by killing or maiming cattle) of the Indian Penal Code and were investigating the matter.
Meanwhile, as the news about the three being detained by the police broke out, several activists of a religious outfit visited the Manimajra police station and urged the SHO to send the meat for testing on Saturday itself to confirm if it was of a cow.
The SHO, however, denied, saying that it would be send to CFSL for testing Monday.
