With the advent of the festive season, the Municipal Corporation has decided to issue prepaid coupons to people who want to set up temporary stalls for Diwali. The coupons will be available at the office of the Municipal Corporation in Sector 17 and Manimajra. However,no stalls will be allowed at Sector 17.
The shopkeepers in all sectors are allowed to put up stalls outside their shops a few days before Diwali. The coupons will be available between November 5 to November 10. As many as eight stalls to give out the coupons will be set up in the MC office in Sector 17 and one in Manimajra. Anyone putting up a stall without the coupon will be charged double the rate as fine.
A section of the traders in Sector 17 opine that they should have been allowed to put up stalls outside their shops. The civic body this year decided not to allow any stalls to be put up in Sector 17 stating that there, shopkeepers were subletting the stalls and earning three to four times the amount that they were paying to the MC.
Varinder Guleria,a shopkeeper in the bridge market says,It is right on the part of the MC not to allow stalls on the pavements where vendors sit on the floor and sell products. This causes chaos in the market. However, the shopkeepers in the bridge market do not sublet the stalls. Rather they themselves sell their products. This should be allowed as is done in the rest of the sectors.
The stalls in the markets in all sectors lead to chaos when the number of stalls that are put up is more than the what the permission is given for. The stalls extend to parking lots creating parking chaos. Due to the large number of stalls, the safety norms are not followed.
