The inflating electricity bills are a reason of headache to the Public Health department of the Municipal Corporation. Of the Rs 90 crore spent annually on generation and distribution of water,Rs 70 crore comprises electricity bills.

A circular has now been issued to all the divisions to keep a check on the electricity bills. It has been warned that in case of failure to do so,the excess amounts would be charged from the officials concerned.

The civic body is spending more than 75 per cent of the amount required for maintenance on payment of electricity bills. Electricity is consumed essentially for making the pumps work. These are installed at Kajauli Water Works as well as the tubewells and the water works in the city.

The city receives 67 million gallons of water daily (mgd) from the four phases of Kajauli Water Works. Pumps work round the clock in order to send water to the city. There is a difference in the levels of Chandigarh and Kajauli Water Works and the water is transferred against gravity. The monthly electricity bill for Kajauli is around Rs 2.60 crore. What led to the alarm bells going was the increase in the power bills of the divisions. One of the divisions generated monthly bills varying between Rs 80 to Rs 90 lakh. A report on this has now been sought.

Meanwhile,Superintending Engineer (Public Health) RC Diwan issued a circular asking officials to keep a check on the electricity bills in their respective divisions. It has been stated that in case the bills are more, the excess amount would be charged from the officials.

A civic body official said that large amount of money are being paid as electricity bills. After the increase in power tariff last year and some other charges being imposed,a substantial part of the operation and maintenance funds are being spent on settling bills.
