People visiting Sector 17 may soon have to shell out more for parking as the Municipal Corporation is contemplating over a proposal to charge vehicles on an hourly basis.
For the first two hours,Rs 5 will be charged. Subsequently,Rs 10 per hour will be charged.
The proposal will be discussed at the meeting of the finance and contract committee to be held on Tuesday. The hourly parking rates would be applicable in two paid parking lots in the sector – the Empire Store parking lot and the Sahib Singh parking lot. It is also proposed that for multiple entries in a day,Rs 50 would be charged.
The civic body has also proposed to make these parking lots fully automated. This would ensure that cars be parked only according to the number of available slots and haphazard parking of vehicles can hence be avoided. There would also be an electronic display to show the number of vacant slots available.
The traders of Sector 17 had expressed opposition to the proposal, stating that they were already facing stiff competition from the malls that have come up in the city. The traders had opined that in case the parking charges were hiked, people would avoid coming there altogether.
There is heavy rush of vehicles at Sector 17,particularly during the weekends, making it difficult to find a space to park. At times, vehicles spill on to the roads, causing traffic jams.
The proposal for hourly parking is being considered as a deterrent for those who park their vehicles irrationally. It is also expected to reduce the rush of vehicles.
The civic body had earlier installed equipment for semi-automation of paid parking lots. However, this could not be put to any use,one of the reasons being multiple entry and exit points.
