An attempt by Mayor Raj Bala Malik to highlight the “achievements” of the Municipal Corporation in 100 days of her tenure seems to have rubbed her own party the wrong way. The Congress councillors have expressed their resentment at the way they were “sidelined” by the Mayor who held a press conference along with the officials of the civic body on Monday.

Over the past few months, differences had been simmering within the Congress with most of the senior leaders complaining that they were not being taken into confidence in the functioning of the civic body. The differences came to the surface when the Mayor went ahead to list out her achievements.

Senior deputy mayor Darshan Garg said,“I got to know that the Mayor was going to list the achievements of the civic body when I reached the MC. It would have been appropriate if all the 35 councillors were invited as everyone was elected on the same day. At least the former Mayors should have been invited for the purpose.”

Similar views were echoed by deputy mayor Satish Kainth. He said since the achievements of the MC were collective, everyone should have been called if these were being listed out because the councillors had undertaken a lot of work in their respective wards.

During the conference, the models of the projects that have been approved were put on display. Most of the projects that were highlighted as achievements in these 100 days were those that had been initiated during the previous years, but were stuck at one or the other stage.

In the last three months, the plans for the overbridge in Sector 17,multi-level parking lot, approval of the building plan of a primary school and work on preparation of starting the drawings of the MC building have started. This was part of the list of achievements.

BJP councillor Arun Sood said,“Leave alone the Opposition, the Mayor is not even taking the councillors of her own party into confidence. Work is not executed because of the efforts of a single person. We had earlier raised the issue that she was not calling the area councillors while visiting their areas.”

However,Raj Bala Malik said,“The conference was called to highlight the achievements in 100 days of my tenure. It was on everyone’s behalf. The work that is being executed is for all to see.”
