A dramatic confrontation between the Mohali Municipal Corporation and the state government has come out in the open, after Mayor Amarjeet Singh Jeeti Sidhu and several councillors held a press conference on Wednesday, levelling serious allegations of political interference in ongoing development works.

The mayor alleged that civic projects across Mohali are being deliberately stalled under “government pressure”, with private individuals visiting project sites and threatening contractors.

Work orders issued, funds available yet projects stopped

According to the mayor, despite approved tenders, issued work orders, and available funds in the municipal account, multiple development works have been halted for months, including road repairs, park upgrades, footpath construction, and other civic projects.

The councillors alleged that in ward 80, Harjeet Singh Bhola’s ward, Reena’s ward, Happy’s ward, and councillor Anuradha’s ward, “outsiders”are stopping contractors and issuing threats.

Senior Deputy Mayor Amreek Singh Somal added, “Private people come and warn contractors work will not start.. you will have to follow my orders.”

Women councillors also claimed they were threatened with legal action for attempting to commence development work.
